A Piecemeal Journey
In college I worked on four print journals and anthologies. I was in the English Honor Society, and volunteered because I thought it might be fun. In 2012 for my graduation, I self-published my first poetry chapbook* to share with friends and family. I even managed to sell a few. A fellow poet commented on how professional my self-published work was compared to most self-published books she’d seen. She asked if I would help her self-publish her first chapbook, and at the time I couldn’t imagine charging her because I didn’t realize how valuable my skills were.
It wasn’t until I was having to explain everything we were doing and walk her through the design process that I realized the value of that publication experience. Within a year I had published six books of poetry, guiding poets through the process of building a manuscript, editing, formatting, layout and graphic design, and finally printing. I formed Piecemeal Press in 2014 under the slogan, “Self Publishing, Not Alone Publishing.”
In 6 years, Piecemeal has helped artists and arts organizations create merchandise to sell- expanding out from chapbooks into offering digital marketing, buttons, posters, and even a Tom Hanks Themed Tarot deck as a commission. Our client base is primarily slam poets and other live performers, but we can take commissions for all digital design or print work. While we do not have an in-house illustrator, we have relationships with several illustrators we can contract with to meet your style goals and budget.
